ROSIE BREST
In 1954 Rosie began working in a local pizza parlor. By 1959 she had accumulated enough money and experience to open her own parlor to make bigger and better pizzas. By 1965 she had settled in her present location and was consistently ”spreading the dough” to promote and sponsor athletic programs in Lorain.
In football Rosie began with the Lorain Hardware eleven in a league sponsored by the Cleveland Browns. When the Lorain Touch Football League was formed in 1965 she entered her ”Rosie’s Pizza” team and still sponsors this team today. The 1979 team won the regional title and finished fourth in the state. Rosie’s gridiron goliaths affectionately call her ”Bum” ala Bum Phillips.
For the past twenty years Rosie has sponsored men’s fast and slow pitch softball. She, also, fielded a girls softball aggregation called ”Just Us”. The last eight years Rosie has added a Little League baseball nine to her fold. Her demons of the diamond call her ”Georgette” ala George Steinbrenner.
In 1963 Rosie became an avid bowler and still sports a 150 average. She sponsors seven bowling teams and a Ladies League at Rebmans and a Mixed Singles Classic League at Broadway. She serves on the Board of Directors of the Lorain Women’s Bowling Association and the bowlers call her ”Sarge” as she serves as Sergeant-at-Arms.
Last but not least, Rosie sponsored the Lorain County Junior Golfers. Is there any doubt Rosie is the ”Godmother” of Lorain’s athletic programs.
