His high school teammates nicknamed him “Bull” for obvious reasons: he was incredibly strong, surprisingly quick and fiercely competitive.

He excelled in all four sports in which he participated at Lorain High — baseball, basketball, football and track — and earned nine varsity letters from 1954-56.

Although standing only 5’10”, he jumped center for coach Al McConihe’s 1955-56 LHS Buckeye Conference basketball champions and led the team in rebounds and assists.

As an All-Conference catcher for mentor Tony Misko’s diamondmen, he led the Steelers to BC titles in 1955 and 1956. In football, where he performed both as a running back and as a lineman, head coach Art Love described him as “the best physical specimen on the team”.

His amazing versatility was showcased in track, as he was the Buckeye Conference champion in the shot put event and also ran a leg on the outstanding LHS 880-yard relay team. He was undefeated in shot put competition during his senior year.

Bowling Green University gridiron tutor, Doyt Perry, awarded him a football scholarship to perform at the fullback position for the Falcons. However, after pacing the Lorain National Tube Co. team to the national championship in Men’s Class “A” baseball in 1957, he was signed to a bonus contract by scout Pat Mullin of the Detroit Tigers, and played well in the minors for several seasons before an injury ended his pro career.
