Dr. William Kishman
Late in the 1930’s while still in Lorain High School, “Doc” Kishman began helping young athletes. He sponsored KISHMAN ACES in the Lorain Table Tennis League. It mattered not that Doc played on his own team, after all he provided competitive opportunity for three other avid players. That was the beginning — we have yet to reach the end.
After graduation in 1941 “Doc” received his B.S. degree from Western Reserve University and his M.D. from New York Medical College. He served in the U.S. Medical Corps as a Captain.
Beginning in 1962 “Doc” shouldered the responsibility of team physician for Lorain High School. Always at the start of the season came the heavy load of physical examinations for the participants. During the football season came the long hours every Friday or Saturday nite, at home or away, taking care of the wounded during the game. Many nights after the game was over and the fans were in bed “Doc” was at the hospital binding the wounds or assisting a specialist that he had called in.
In retrospect Doc muses, “Fortunately we never had a tragedy at Lorain Hi. Tho sometimes on the way to the hospital you worried about the safety of the player. In those years that Lorain was outmanned it seemed we were working on the quarterback every week. It has been worth every minute — keeping them whole and giving them medical advice so they would be able to attend college or be in good health for later life. Although as Coroner I can’t travel as much, I still enjoy tending to the team’s needs.”
Doc served as Medical Advisor for the Junior Olympic games from their inception in 1972. The Junior Olympic Committee dedicated the 1976 Bicentennial meets to “Doctor Bill for his continuous and sincere dedication to youth.”
One final note — Doc and his wife Alice added seven children to the youth of Lorain, THAT’S DEDICATION.
