Kolczun ll, Dr. Michael C.

Dr. Michael C. Kolczun ll – (1999)

There have been instances in the previous 29 Lorain Sports Hall of
Fame enshrinements where brothers, or fathers and sons, have been
inducted for their excellence as athletes, often in the same sport.

But when Dr. Michael C. Kolczun II puts on his LSHF jacket and
accepts his plaque tonight, he will be joining his father, the late
Dr. Michael Kolczun who was inducted in 1986, in what has to be a
most unique category. Both excelled in the field of sports medicine,
starting when Mike II joined his Dad as a business partner in 1973.

Long before he reached his lifetime’s profession, however, Mike II,
or “MC” as he is known to his friends, was a proficient enough athlete
where he could just as easily be honored in that category. Following
his freshman year at Lorain St. Mary High School, he spent the next
three years at Gilmour Academy where he blossomed as an athlete.
He then moved on to Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, where he
garnered 12 varsity letters in football, lacrosse and track, including
being voted captain his senior year in football and lacrosse.

He enrolled at the Medical School at Louisiana State University
(LSU) in New Orleans where he specialized in orthopedics, leading
him to the Orthopedic Clinic at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation where
he remained until joining his father as a business partner.

While his medical practice excelled, Dr. Kolczun II followed his father’s path by assisting young athletes
who needed help most. Among his many contributions in the area—most of it at no cost to his young
patients—was organizing other physicians to donate time and energy to this cause, including providing free
physical examinations for all Lorain area athletes. Also available to them is the outstanding
Kolczun & Kolczun Orthopaedic Associates Inc. facility in Lorain. No athlete has ever been
denied assistance because of financial or insurance difficulties.

Among his many other areas of athletic assistance was making available an athletic train-
ers staff who visit all area high schools to assist coaches in evaluating and rehabilitating
injured athletes, including providing medical equipment and supplies at no charge. He wrote
and published a valuable desk top reference guide which is provided free to all area
coaches. And, like his dad, Mike II is a regular Friday night physician at area high school
athletic events.
