JIM LAWHEAD
On December 10, 1983 the Lorain Catholic basketball scoreboard brilliantly displayed the final result – Lorain Catholic 80, Brookside 48. It was not a classic win but it was a memorable milestone in Jim Lawhead’s career. At the beginning of his 22nd year as a varsity basketball coach he had achieved his 300th win.
Despite a couple of lean years at Brookside, Jim’s 23 year overall record now stands at 341 wins and 133 losses. As Lorain Catholic’s only basketball coach, the scoreboard reflects a record of 253 – 99 for a percentage of .719.
Jim’s quintets have won 11 conference championships and 13 Sectional titles. His teams have appeared in the Regionals six times including the last four years and won titles in 1976 and 1985.
In 1985 at the State finals, Lorain Catholic lost to state champion Youngstown Rayen in the semi-finals. In 1976 the Spartans fell just one point short of the state championship, losing 82-81 to Dayton Roth. That year LC finished at 25-1 (25 in a row) the best AA record in Ohio and it still stands as the school’s finest season. That 1976 aggregation set eight scoring records during the state finals including one game stats of most field goals 46 – most points 108 and tournament stats for the two final games of most field goals 75 – most points 189.
Jim has been named ”Coach of the Year” by his league 10 times. Northeast District 8 times and for Lorain County thrice. Finally, he has been selected as a member of the Ohio Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
