JIM MAHONY
Inducted April 29, 1981
A sportsman in the finest sense of the word, he has served as a reporter and editor with the Lorain JOURNAL since 1935, promoting local sports events and athletes with his inspired rhetoric.
He participated in basketball at Lorain St. Mary’s High School from 1933-35, and upon graduation in ’35 began working for the local newspaper. His colorful descriptions of athletic events have made him a legendary figure, and he has made significant contributions to his community during 45 years of continuous service.
As an athlete he performed in various city bowling and basketball leagues, but a special interest has always been the sport of boxing. This interest has been demonstrated by his involvement as a judge and official at countless boxing matches through the years. He is a familiar figure at every local “card.”
At the JOURNAL he has served in numerous capacities, including Sports Editor during the late ’30s and early ’40s. He is gifted with a unique flair for writing, and possesses a keen insight into athletic personalities.
His love for people and for the city of Lorain are apparent in all his writings. Frequently filled with exciting sports information, his popular column, “Mahony’s Memos,” is an institution in this community of 80,000.
Mr. Mahony’s reputation as a talented journalist is surpassed only by his eminence as a person. His marriage of 33 years has produced six children.
