Philip Trinter competed in the 2004, 28th Olympiad, last August, held in Athens, Greece. Teamed with Skipper Paul Cayard, their stellar performance earned them a fifth place finish against the world’s most prestigious sailors, culminating with Phil’s election into the 2005 Lorain Sports Hall of Fame.
Phil was introduced to the passion and rigors of sailing at the early age of eight by his parents, Diane and Bob. For the next twelve years, Phil participated in numerous sailing competitions and was consistently a high finisher. His outstanding performances impacted his sailing goals.
Phil entered Lorain High School as a multi-talented performer in football and basketball. He earned numerous honors including: First Team Buckeye Conference, First Team All Lorain County, Lorain High School Outstanding Lineman Award, and he participated in the Lorain County East-West All-Star Game. On the hardwood, Phil was a member of the outstanding 1986-87 Buckeye Conference Championship team. This team, winner of 20 games, is considered one of the finest in LHS history.
After receiving numerous football scholarship offers, Phil chose to continue his gridiron career at Indiana University, in the powerful Big Ten Conference. While at I.U., he was a four time letterman. Between 1987 and 1991, the Hoosiers went to four Bowl games, the Peach (2), Liberty, and Copper Bowls. He was the recipient of the 1991 IU “Hoosier Award” as an outstanding Senior exemplifying team dedication.
With college behind him, Philip returned to his sailing career that included numerous notable achievements. In 1992, Phil teamed with Skipper Joe Londrigan. With immediate success, they won the 1992 Star Class North American Championship. The following year, they captured the Star Class World Championship in Kiel, Germany (97 boats competing). Following the 1993 victory, the U.S. Olympic Committee named the crew as “Sailing’s 1993 Athletes of the Year”.
After a dominating performance in the 1998 Star Class Western Hemisphere Spring Championship in Nassau, Phil’s notoriety earned him high respect in the sailing community.
In 2000, he crewed aboard “America One”, and in 2002 aboard “Oracle/BMW” in the “Super Bowl” of sailing, “The America’s Cup”. Trinter’s skills caught the attention of many peers and he teamed up with Skipper Paul Cayard to win the 2003 North American Championship. This victory paved the way for a 2004 win of the Star Class Olympic Trials and the honor of representing the United States in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.
Phil and his Olympic Team Members were invited to the White House and received personal congratulations from President George Bush. After returning to his New York home, Phil was presented the “Crystal Apple” for his Olympic accomplishments by the Mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg.
Trinter’s exploits have taken him around the world receiving prestigious honors for both his Country and his City. The life of a professional sailor engulfs numerous notable achievements, great passions, and many friendships.
Phil resides in Port Washington, New York with his wife, Chrissy. They are expecting their first child in August.
