Steve Bailey – (1978)

Truly a local boy who made good. He is such a natural athlete that he always has excelled in every sport he pursued, including baseball, softball, bowling, racquetball and golf.

Entertained an excellent 10-year professional baseball career, highlighted by being a member of the Cleveland Indians Major League pitching staff in 1967 and 1968.

His solid minor league career included mound duty at Charleston, Portland, Reading, Pawtucket and Dubuque. At Dubuque, Ia., he struck out 204 batters in 1962, including a record 21 in one game.

Stepping stone to the American League was a remarkable 9-2 record with 125 strikeouts and a 2.60 earned run average at Pawtucket, R. I.

Highlight of major league career was winning his first two games and once striking out the side in a brilliant relief role. The super strong righthander also hurled in South American winter leagues against a host of world renowned major league batsmen.

Earned nickname “No-Hit” after firing two perfect games in leading Lorain Meritt Construction to the State Hot Stove title in 1959, and blazing more no-hitters for Lorain High’s Steelmen from 1958-60.

An astute professional in all endeavors, he holds Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Oberlin College and Kent State University, respectively. Mr. Bailey was appointed Director of City Parks and Recreation in 1977.
