WELLS GRAY
Inducted April 25, 1979
Football was his first love, and the “love affair” became national news when the rugged 230-pound offensive lineman from Lorain was elected Captain of the 1955 University of Wisconsin football team.
An outstanding guard and tackle for the Lorain High Steelmen from 1948-51, he was named to several All-Ohio teams.
He was chosen All-Big Ten in 1955 after excelling for the University of Wisconsin varsity gridiron squad from 1952-55.
Highlight of his remarkable career as a “Badger” was the memorable 1953 Rose Bowl clash with Southern California when Wisconsin was led by All-American fullback Alan “The Horse” Ameche.
He competed in the 1955 North/South All-Star Game in Miami along with future NFL greats Sam Huff and Forrest Gregg.
In addition to his football prowess, he was a splendid hockey player, skating for the Lorain Super’s Sohio team in the rough Cleveland Metro League.
Mr. Gray majored in Dairy Technology at Wisconsin, and is now general manager of Lorain Creamery. He continues to be active with golf, tennis, racquetball and handball.
