AL “ELI” HODKEY

An outstanding sandlot and minor league pitcher, Al pitched in two games for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1946. He was signed to a professional contract at the age of 19, one year after his 1936 graduation from Lorain High School. He compiled a record of 109-47 in his minor league career which stretched from 1937-1948. In an exhibition game he struck out sluggers Joe Cronin, Jimmy Fox and Bobby Doerr in one inning. He also tossed two no-hitters in the minor leagues. He retired in 1949 after failing to recover from an unknown arm injury.
