Taylor, Debra

Debra Taylor – (2007)

Debra Taylor is considered by many to be one of the finest female athletes to ever have come through the Lorain School System. She was a dominant Junior High School player in Volleyball and Basketball while leading her teams to championships in the seventh and eighth grades

Debra continued her high level of performance at Admiral King, in both volleyball and basketball from school years 1983-84 through 1986-87. In volleyball, she was a four year starter and All Conference Team, and All-County for three years and All District her last two years.

Basketball, however, was her greatest strength where she was a starter and lettered for four years. Some of her more significant individual achievements are noted:
• From 1985 to 1987 she was named All County, All Buckeye Conference and Erie Shore Conference first teams.

• In the 1986 and 1987 seasons she was named to the All-District team.

• In 1987 Debra was selected to the Associated Press Class AAA first team All Ohio.

• At the time of her graduation she was the second leading rebounder and scoring leader in Admiral King’s girl’s basketball program.

In addition to the four Conference titles she led her team to four sectional crowns and three district runner up finishes.

Because of her outstanding high school achievements she was awarded a four year athletic scholarship to Cleveland State University (CSU). Her basketball continued to flourish in college. Debra was a four year starter, 1987-1991, and an All North Star Conference second team as a sophomore and first team as a junior and senior. She was the first female CSU player to be accorded those honors. She was named the team’s Most Outstanding Player in each of her four years.

Debra proved to be one of the outstanding players in the history of CSU’s women’s basketball program. At the time of her induction to the Lorain Sports Hall of Fame, sixteen years later, she still ranks third in scoring, rebounding and field goals made. Her statistics also show Debra is first in free throw percentage (82%), and free throws attempted and made while playing in ninety three games.

Debra was inducted into the CSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001.

She graduated from CSU with a Degree in Psychology and is currently a substitute teacher working in the Lorain School System. Debra was a volunteer assistant girls basketball coach in 2004 and 2005 and the Freshman Girls Basketball coach at Admiral King for the 2006-07 season.
