Known affectionally to’ the bowling fraternity as “Pistol Pete”, he has been recognized as one of Northern Ohio’s best bowlers, instructors and pro-shop managers for nearly two decades
His interest in bowling was nurtured at old Andorka Lanes in South Lorain where he was a 15-year old pinsetter and a member of a young team of keglers called “Whiz Kids.”
The 28-year veteran lanesman has totaled an almost unbelieveable 67 American Bowling Congress sanctioned series of 700 pins or better, with his career high being 781. He has averaged 200 pins or more 11 times in the Lorain Bowling Association.
In addition to the above mentioned laurels, the smooth righthander has notched eight 700-plus series in tournament competition and five unsanctioned 300 perfect games while practicing or rolling exhibitions.
The 1953 Lorain High graduate’s biggest thrills were winning two consecutive Professional Bowling Association (PBA) Regional qualifiers which placed him in the National PBA finals at Dallas in 1964 and Philadelphia in 1965.
Among his numerous other State or Regional pin crowns include American Slovak Singles, Ohio Amvets (four times) and the Ohio Nationwide Insurance Television tourney where he ripped a six-game 218 average performing before live cameras at Ashland.
Mr. Kallas, whose integrity as the Saxon Lanes Pro Shop manager is second to none, credits much of his success in the Ten Pin sport to retired Saxon proprietor Gus Binder.
