WILLIAM J. KARPINSKI
Bill Karpinski began his athletic career in Lorain Little League and other
sandlot leagues. His Class E baseball team won back to back championships in
Ohio’s Hot Stove League.
During junior high days Bill played with the Hawthorne Cowboys as an end in
football and as center on the basketball team. Both teams won city champion-
ships in 1955-56. In the basketball finale Bill scored 18 points in leading the
Cowboy cagers in the toga.
Moving on to Lorain Hi, Bill moved in as a starting guard as a sophomore. As
the starting center in his junior year in 1957-58 he led the Steelmen with 166 re-
bounds and 212 points.
In his senior year Bill set a season record by hauling in 22 rebounds in one
game as he led the team to a 17-3 record. He had 252 rebounds, scored 324
points with an efficiency percentage of 43%.
Turning to baseball Bill toiled at first base for the Steelmen who won the
Buckeye Conference. In football he was at end and vividly remembers the 16-6
upset of the #2 ranked Warren Harding eleven which featured Paul Warfield of
NFL fame.
For all his academic and athletic achievements Bill was honored with the
George Daniel “Danny Award”.
Bill was accepted at the U.S. Naval Academy. He was a member of the Navy
rowing team and played four years with the Navy basketball team.
