DALE REICHERT
Inducted April 25, 1979
A superb all-around athlete, he earned All-Ohio honors in high school basketball and later became a highly-publicized “bonus baby” with the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball organization.
Affectionately dubbed “Beef Trust” by his Lorain High teammates, he was gifted with incredible reflexes and amazing peripheral vision on the basketball court. He led Coach Al McConihe’s Steelmen to the Buckeye Conference crown and Sectional Tourney championship in 1955-56, and concluded his great LHS cage career as the top scorer in school history.
On the baseball diamond for LHS he batted .586 in his senior year, and paced Tony Misko’s powerful squad to BC titles in both 1955 and 1956. He pitched the championship contest against Marion in ’56 and walloped the game-winning homerun.
He attended Kent State University where he garnered varsity letters in both basketball and baseball. After batting .379 and .478 in two seasons for the Golden Flashes, he signed a $24,000.00 bonus contract with the L.A. Dodgers in 1959 and was assigned to Kokomo (Indiana) where he slugged 30 roundtrippers, drove in 100 runs and was named the league’s MVP.
Following successful minor league stops at Great Falls (Montana), Green Bay (Wisconsin) and Salem (Oregon), he returned to KSU to complete his education. Selected as Lorain High’s head basketball coach in 1968, he has piloted the Steelmen to six Sectional Tourney titles.
An outstanding performer in local men’s leagues, he has excelled for such championship teams as Lorain Duke Beer in basketball, plus Amherst Wyvill Texaco and Lorain Ritter Signs in softball.
