KURT SCHUMACHER
When it comes to Lorain sports, Kurt Schumacher may not be in a class by
himself but, as the saying goes, it doesn’t take long to call the roll.
When it comes strictly to the game of football, Kurt may well stand alone in
achievement.
As a fullback-lineman at Lorain High School and later as a powerful offensive
tackle at Ohio State University under legendary coach Woody Hayes, Kurt earned
an incredible array of honors. He then moved into a five-year career in the pro ranks
when the New Orleans Saints made him a first-round pick as the 12th player
chosen in the 1975 National Football League draft.
If Kurt’s career had ended at Lorain High, he would already have notched
enough recognition for Hall of Fame consideration. His prep honors include: first-
team All-Ohio from both Associated Press and United Press International,
Scholastic Coach Magazine All-American, Ohio North-South All-Star Game partici-
pant, All-Buckeye Conference, Lorain County Golden Helmet winner and Plain
Dealer Dream Teamer.
Even bigger honors were waiting at Ohio State: first-team All-Big Ten (twice), UPI
All-American, Kodak All-American, Sporting News All-American, Walter Camp All-
American. Kurt also played in the Hula Bowl and in the 1975 College All-Star Game
against the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers.
In addition Kurt started for the Buckeyes in two consecutive Rose Bowls.
When Kurt’s outstanding college career ended he moved up to the pros, the first
three seasons with the Saints and the final two with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A
knee injury hastened Kurt’s premature retirement in 1979.
