He was one of the greatest athletes during an era of great athletes, “The Roaring ’20s”.

At Lorain High he excelled in football and basketball from 1924-26. On the gridiron he earned three varsity letters, was elected Captain in his senior year, and led the Steelmen to the championship of the rugged “Little Big Seven” League for three straight years. In basketball he teamed with Hall-of-Famers Al McConihe, Phil “Flip” Kelser and Bill Yeckley, plus Jerry O’Toole, as the 1925 Lorain High School squad posted an impressive 15-3 mark to win the loop crown.

Famed coach Earl McCaskey said this about Stewart: “Colin was an ideal athlete and leader. He was Captain of our championship football team at Lorain High School, was selected First Team All-League at the end position, and was elected President of his graduating class. He was a ‘Coach’s Dream’.”

Stewart entered Kiski Prep and continued to star on the gridiron. Transferring to Carnegie Tech, a national football power at that time, he blossomed into one of the finest players in the country. During his senior year he was elected Captain of the Carnegie Tech eleven, which was considered the strongest team in the East.

He was picked to play in the prestigious North/South All-Star Game after the conclusion of his senior year of football competition.

He competed in the Lorain area for many famous local teams. Hall-of-Famer Joe Fitzgerald, who graduated from Lorain High School a year after Colin, remembers him well: “He was the outstanding athlete of his day, and he was always a gentleman, which was rare in the rough-and-tumble semi-pro and city leagues. He was a tremendous football and basketball player, and was one of the very best soccer players in the area.”

In football, he performed superbly for the Ex-Hi’s, a semi-pro squad and one of the best teams ever in Lorain County, while as a cager he sparkled for the fabled Phillips quintet. Mr. Stewart died in 1973.
