Football was his game, and he excelled at every level of competition: All-Ohio selection at Lorain High, All-MAC honors at Ohio University, and a starting offensive end for the Ottawa Roughriders of the Canadian Football League.

At Lorain High School from 1954-57, he earned varsity letters in football, track and basketball, performing for coach Art Lave on the gridiron and for Hall-of-Famer mentor Al McConihe on the hardwood. As a two-way end for the Steelmen gridders, he was named first team All-Ohio in his senior year, and played in the Ohio North/South All-Star Game in Canton.

It was on to Ohio University, where the talented Belu sparked the Bobcats football squad to an undefeated season and an MAC championship in 1960. In addition to playing both ways, he also booted kickoffs and field goals, earning the nickname of “The Toe”.

Belu won three varsity letters in football at Ohio University, garnered All-MAC honors, and earned All-American Honorable Mention.

Drafted by the Ottawa Roughriders of the Canadian Football League, he performed as a professional for three seasons, starting at tight end from 1962-1964.

Entering the coaching profession in 1965, he served as defensive coordinator at Marshall University. He continued his successful career as a gridiron tutor at Denison University, Miami University (Ohio), University of Colorado, and North Carolina State.

Presently he is the offensive coordinator at Louisiana State University. As a coach he has participated in many major bowls, including the Tangerine Bowl (1973), Bluebonnet Bowl (1975), and the Orange Bowl (1976). He has tutored six All-American linemen, including Jim Ritcher, who won the Outland Trophy in 1979 as the finest lineman in college football.
