EDWARD S. (ED) DOHANOS
Inducted May 7, 1998
Those who know Edward S. (Ed) Dohanos could easily describe his lifelong career as a high school and college athlete, high school coach and as a highly regarded high school football and basketball official this way:
“His is a labor of love, pure and simple!”
Now a resident of Wellington, Dohanos is a product of Clearview High School (1940-44) where he earned nine varsity letters, three in football, two in basketball and four in track. He went to four state tournaments, one in basketball and three in track, and received All-Ohio recognition in track his senior year.
Upon graduation, and after two years of military service (he received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star), Dohanos went to Baldwin-Wallace College (1946-49) where he won two varsity letters, one each in football and track.
Following his graduation from B-W, Dohanos began a high school coaching trek that took him to Lodi (head coach football, basketball and track), Ravenna (head basketball and track coach four years), Paulding (head basketball and assistant football coach), Lorain High (assistant in football and track) and Admiral King High (assistant in football, basketball, baseball and track and head coach in volleyball over a 17-year span).
It was in 1956 that former Lorain High and Admiral King Coach Tony Misko (1997 LSHOF enshrinee) persuaded Dohanos to become an official. Dohanos was convinced, and thus began an officiating career lasting some 38 years. He was assigning secretary-commissioner of the Erie Coast League, Lake Erie League, Firelands Conference and Southwest Conference.
His work as an official earned him respect from coaches, athletic directors and players throughout Ohio. Over his extensive career, Dohanos has officiated four state basketball tournaments and countless sectional, regional and district tournaments. In addition, he has been a much-in-demand football official for more than 30 years, including working every post-season playoff season since Ohio began high school gridiron playoffs.
WELCOME, ED DOHANOS, INTO THE LORAIN SPORTS HALL OF FAME
