Jay Hershey

Jay Hershey’s distinguished career started in 1954 at Lorain High. By the time he graduated, he had garnered 9 letters — 3 in baseball — 3 in basketball and 3 in football.

Football was Jay’s forte. He opened his junior year as the starting quarterback for the Steelers. For two years, Fremont and Sandusky vied with Lorain for the Buckeye Conference Titles. A bitter one point defeat by the Fremont Little Giants cost Lorain’s 8-1-1 aggregation the Buckeye Title. Fremont was ranked 2nd in the State and Lorain 6th.

In 1955 and 1956, Jay was a member of one of Lorain’s finest round ball quintets. They won the conference going away and the team set scoring records.

It was during high school that Jay pitched and played outfield for the Steeler Mine. During the summers, he played in the Hot Stove Leagues. In 1954, his club was State Runner-Up, in 1955 reached the semi-finals and in 1956 the Lorain Youth Center with a 21-0 record won the Class D state championship. Jay pitched the final 3-2 victory against the Akron Yankees.

Enrolling at Bowling Green, Jay was the starting quarterback on an undefeated frosh team. He played three years on the varsity. In his junior year, B-G won the Mid American Conference and small college National Championship with a 10-0 record.

During a stint in the U.S. Army, Jay played football. His outfit won the European Theater Championship for two years with Jay playing in the All Star game alongside Clarence Childs of the New York Giants and Roy Shivers of the St. Louis Cards.

Jay returned to the Lorain area and has compiled 23 years as a football coach and athletic director. His present status is Athletic Director at Wellington High School.
