Inducted April 29, 1981

An extraordinary all-around athlete, he earned nine varsity letters at Lorain High from 1927-30, excelling in track, football and basketball, and also was a standout performer in baseball, volleyball and wrestling.

As a lightning-quick 5′ 10″, 135-lb. guard for Coach Earl McCaskey’s 1929-30 Lake Erie League basketball champs, he was selected for the First Team All-LEHI squad along with teammate and Hall-of Famer, Frank (Bozo) Ursic.

His remarkable versatility was highlighted in track, where he sparkled in the high jump, running broad jump, low hurdles and high hurdles, setting numerous school records. He served as team captain for the 1930 LHS squad, and qualified to compete in the State Meet at Columbus in the broad jump and high hurdle events.

Chosen as team captain for the ’29 Steelmen football squad, he starred at the quarterback position and also ran back punts and kickoffs. Playing against Elyria High at Elyria on Nov. 20, 1929, he electrified the 7,000 fans by returning the opening kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown, and then added insult to injury by scampering for another score later in the contest.

Following his fantastic high school sports career, he entered DePauw University and participated in freshman football, track and wrestling. He was DePauw’s 1931 freshman handball champion. Transferring to Ohio University in 1932, he competed in football, basketball and track.

Returning to his hometown, he played semi-pro football (Ex-Hi’s), Class A basketball (Ebinger Coal, Bendix), and softball (Sears, Lions, National Tube). From 1942-45 he was varsity basketball coach at Lorain St. Mary’s High School, leading the Fighting Irish to the Sectional finals in two of those years. He was instrumental in organizing the C.Y.O. basketball program, and served as a coach and official from 1945-49.

Mr. Andrews was an Engineer with Bendix-Westinghouse for 33 years, retiring in 1974. He has nine children. During his retirement years he has been active in various golf and bowling leagues.
