Dr. Michael Kolczun
Spanning over 40 years on the area sports scene, Dr. Michael C. Kolczun has attracted widespread attention.
Native of Donora, Pa., Dr. Kolczun began the practice of orthopedic surgery in Lorain in 1941. It was at that time, he became physician for a Lorain semi-pro football team and also Lorain High School’s gridiron squad.
From 1955 through 1962, the surgeon was performing field duties for the Irish football warriors of Lorain St. Mary High. It was in the 1960’s, his talents were in demand at Admiral King High — a post he still holds.
After earning his M.D. degree at the Louisiana State University Medical School, Dr. Kolczun completed both internship and residency training at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and International College of Surgeons.
Dr. Kolczun was a pioneer among Ohio physicians in promoting sports medicine training for scholastic coaches. More than 30 years before the Ohio State Board of Education mandated annual seminars, he established a two-day program for Lorain County football coaches. During the same period, he spearheaded establishment of a football conditioning camp for Lorain High School.
Today, Dr. Kolczun, his son, Michael C. Kolczun II, M.D., Donald F. Blanford, M.D., and Athletic Trainer Robert S. Gray comprise the Kolczun & Kolczun Orthopedic Associates Sprots Medicine Clinic.
”Dr. Kolczun’s outstanding work, his qualities as a physician, and his compassion are a source of great pride for us”, said M. A. Amiri, M.D., president of the Lorain County Medical Society.
Dr. Kolczun was one of six Ohio physicians selected to receive a 1983 ”Ohio Outstanding Team Physician Award” sponsored by the Joint Advisory Committee on Sports Medicine of the Ohio State Medical Association and Ohio High School Athletic Association.
”I have received a great deal of satisfaction working with athletes”, Dr. Kolczun said. He is an enthusiastic golfer — battling in ”Age 70 and Over” competition and hoping for another trophy.
