William H. Yeckley – (1977)

 

William H. (Bill) Yeckley served as captain of the 1931 Princeton University football team and later rose to vice president of operations of Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co.

The rugged, two-fisted son of the late E.G. (Ed) Yeckley, Lorain industrialist and sportsman, graduated from Princeton in 1932 — in the midst of the Big Depression — after being captain of the varsity football team and a college boxing champion. He also played lacrosse and took part in dramatics.

Yeckley was an outstanding athlete at Lorain High School where he played tackle on the football team, made the National Honor Society and participated in numerous activities, including debating and dramatics.

He graduated at 17 and went on to Kiski Prep for two years and captained the football team.

Yeckley was vice president of operations at Youngstown Steel when he retired in 1964, after 31 years in the steel business, and entered the University of Maryland at age 55 to work on a Master’s Degree in political science.

At Lorain High he was All-League in football in 1923-24-25 while also participating in basketball in 1924-25 and track, 1924-25.

Yeckley died at age 66 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.
